What is it about haunted castles and houses that intrigues us humans so?

Do we have an unfulfilled wish to tempt fate or do we just have an all-consuming desire to bring back those old childhood memories of monsters under the bed, spooks in the wardrobe and things that go bump in the night?

Is it something that eats away at the curiosity, yes, even as children, to want to see a ghost and prove to the adults that, yes, monsters do exist?

Do you remember pointing to the closet with a quivering finger as a child and demanding that your parents check one more time?
